The Westport Moving Pictures Film and Discussion Series has announced its fall schedule. All screenings are free and take place at 6:30 p.m. on Sundays at Westport Presbyterian Church, 201 Westport Road.

The lineup:

•“Brick Lane” (Sunday): Born in a poor village in Bangladesh, Nazneen (Tannishtha Chatterjee) married the buffoonish Chanu (brilliantly portrayed by Indian comic Satish Kaushik) and moved with him to London, where they start a family. But even as Chanu’s career collapses, Nazneen finds herself drawn to a handsome young man who uses her sewing skills to knock off cheap copies of designer jeans. Ultimately she must decide if her destiny is controlled by fate … or herself.

•“In the Valley of Elah” (Oct. 25): A retired career soldier (Tommy Lee Jones) launches a personal investigation into the murder of his son, only just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. Working with a local police detective (Charlize Theron), he closes in on some dark secrets.

•“Crash” (Nov. 15): This Oscar-winning drama weaves several plot lines to describe the subtle (and not so subtle) racial antagonisms that swirl around a dozen characters in modern Los Angeles. Other Oscars: original screenplay and editing. With Matt Dillon, Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Brendan Fraser, Thandie Newton and Terrence Howard.

Slash and Bash

Actress Adrienne Barbeau (“The Fog,” “Escape From New York,” “The Cannonball Run,” “Creepshow” and “Swamp Thing” — plus a little TV show called “Maude”) will be the guest of honor at this weekend’s Slash and Bash Horror and Sci-Fi Festival in Topeka.

The fest is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Holiday Inn Holidome, 605 S.W.
