Fort Worth on the Cheap | The State Fair of Texas … on the Cheap
It’s September, and that can only mean one thing - time for the State Fair of Texas, which opens Sept. 25 in Dallas. I don’t know of very many ways to make the fair easier on your wallet, short of telling you to not go on rides. But you don’t want to hear that, right? So here’s what I can tell you.
Buy your tickets ahead of time. Depending on which tickets you select, you’ll get discounts that range anywhere from negligible to significant. A season pass to the fair, which gets you unlimited visits to the fair until it ends Oct. 18, is about $40 if you buy it online at the SFOT website; however, if you buy it at a DFW-area Kroger, you’ll pay only $30. (Call your grocery store before you go to make sure they have them; I believe most locations do, but you can never be sure.) Day passes bought at the SFOT gate are $15, advance passes on the SFOT website are $12.95 and at Kroger, they’re $13.50. BUT you’ll pay an $8 delivery charge if you buy them on the SFOT site, so again, Kroger is your best bet, unless you live more than 30 miles from one.
Another interesting offer from Kroger that’s not available on the SFOT ticket site is the Fair/DART combo, which gets you a ticket to the fair and a ride to Fair Park on DART for $16. (You can’t use the ticket to transfer to DART from the TRE or T.) But the SFOT site also has an exclusive combination: One ticket to the fair and one ticket to the Dallas Arboretum for $18.
There are lots of offerings; see the details on for details.
Bring your own food. If you’re looking to do the fair on the cheap, skip the fair food (or limit it) and bring your own food and drinks to the fair. Coolers and food are allowed inside, though coolers will be searched and no alcohol, metal utensils or glass bottles are permitted.
Take the TRE. Save time, gas, and hassle by taking the Trinity Railway Express to Fair Park. . Tickets from Fort Worth are $7.50 apiece, but you can pay $2 if you’re ages 5-14, a high school student, disabled, or 65+. With parking at $10 a car in official fair lots, taking the TRE could save you some dough.
